The official test is booked and paid for on GOV.UK, at least 3 days in advance. Some appointment slots cost more than the standard fee.

Why the KoLL requirement matters
To settle in the UK or become a British citizen, the Home Office asks you to meet the Knowledge of Language and Life requirement, known as KoLL. It has two parts, and most people need both.
The two parts of KoLL
- Knowledge of life: pass the Life in the UK Test.
- Knowledge of language: prove your English speaking and listening at CEFR B1.
- You normally need both for indefinite leave to remain and for British citizenship.
- Miss either one and the application is refused, and the fee is not returned.
The Life in the UK Test
- 24 questions in 45 minutes, and you need 18 correct to pass.
- The fee is £50 and you book it on GOV.UK, at least 3 days ahead.
- A pass never expires, so it counts for settlement and later for citizenship.
- All questions come from the official handbook, 3rd edition.
The English requirement
- The level is CEFR B1 in speaking and listening.
- You can meet it with a Secure English Language Test, known as a SELT.
- Trinity College London GESE Grade 5 is the usual B1 SELT.
- A degree taught in English, or being a national of a listed majority English speaking country, can also meet it.
- We are a Trinity approved SELT service provider and prepare learners from A1 to C2.
Who does not need KoLL
- People under 18, and people aged 65 or over.
- People with a long term physical or mental condition, with a doctor's evidence.
- Some immigration routes are treated differently.
Changes to plan for
- Now: B1 English and the Life in the UK Test apply to settlement and to citizenship.
- From 26 March 2027: the English level for settlement rises from B1 to B2 on a number of routes. This is written into the Immigration Rules but has not started yet.
- Already in force: since 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual applicants need B2 at the visa stage.
- Proposed only: a longer qualifying period for settlement, English requirements for some dependants, and a refresh of the Life in the UK Test. None of these are law yet.
- If your settlement application will fall on or after 26 March 2027, B2 is the level to aim for. Starting early costs less than resitting.
